Swimwear Through the Years

Swimwear is one of those special categories of clothing that has been around for years and years. For years, people have been recreationally swimming and they need some type of special clothing to swim in. It would be hard (and take far too much of your time) to go through the complete history of swimwear, so we wanted to focus on the 20th century through present day. How have styles evolved? Why does our designer swimwear look the way it does today? And what can we expect for styles of the future?

At the dawn of the 1900′s, all sorts of recreational activities were becoming more and more popular. There wasn’t such a gap between the wealthy and the lower class, so more people were able to start taking vacations and weekend trips to the seaside. Women wore large bathing dresses, that were often bulky and hard to swim in. The gowns were at least knee-length, often black, and made of wool. For obvious reasons, women didn’t do much swimming in these dresses.

Flash forward about forty years and hemlines and sleeves are suddenly a thing of the past. War has ended, people are happy, and pin-ups are all the rage. These curvy women loved to show off their figures in body-hugging monokinis. Usually cut low on the leg and more straight-across on the top, the swimsuits were still fairly conservative. Until two French designers went further than any other designer had gone, and cut the one-piece monokini into two, creating the first ever bikini.

Created by Louis Reard and Jacques Heim, the first bikini was still fairly conservative (as far as two-pieces are concerned) in that the bottoms came up high enough to cover the navel (a scandalous body part to show off at the time). The bathing suit was named the “Atome” and dubbed the world’s “smallest bathing suit”. Reard was the man who called the swimsuit a bikini, named after a series of islands where nuclear bomb testing was being done- assuming that it would create the same type of reactions amongst people when it was revealed. Reard then cut a few inches off the top of the bikini bottoms, revealing the wearer’s navel. Because of its scandalous new look, it was near impossible to find a model to advertise the new swimsuit. So, Reard found the one type of person he knew would gladly show off her navel- a nude dancer from Paris, Micheline Bernardini. Once the shockwave wore off, the bikini became a huge hit.

Still a huge hit, the same basic style of string bikini Louis Reard came up with 60 years ago, is still being designed and re-designed today. Nowadays, luxury swimwear companies such as Lady Lux have re-invented the string bikini to add glamorous details and hardware. 60 years ago the concept of adding chains and stones to a swimsuit might have seemed impossible, however, Lady Lux does it with class and grace! It’s hard to say where the future of swimwear is headed, but we definitely like it!

Bachelorettes in Bikinis

It’s the show that everyone loves to hate (or is it hates to love?). The Bachelorette is now in its 9th season, after first airing all the way back in 2003. Whether you admit you watch the show or not, everyone must know how wonderfully glamorous each of these women dress. Most likely due to a stylist for the show, but either way, their style is envied by women across America. Another key feature of the show is the numerous tropical getaways per season. What does that mean? These beautiful men and women get to show off their near-perfect bodies in their designer swimwear. We would like to take a moment to recap some of our favorite bachelorette bikini moments for you…

Desiree Hartsock is our current Bachelorette, leading the show into it’s 9th season. After getting dumped on national television by one of the Bachelors, she was able to land a spot as a leading lady- turning the tables and allowing Desiree to call the shots. Desiree, without a doubt, has one of the best bodies on the show to date. It’s obvious the girl is passionate about staying in shape. To best show off a fit figure like hers, she chose a brightly colored turquoise swimsuit. This is a great way to draw attention to yourself and your toned figure. To match the color of Desiree’s suit, opt for a bright bandeau like Paradise. This style features glam hardware in the center and also at the hips.

While she wasn’t a headlined “Bachelorette” herself, Courtney Robertson definitely made headlines with some of her questionable behavior on Ben’s season of “The Bachelor”. The 28 year old model from Arizona was best known for stripping down to nothing with then-bachelor Ben during his season of the show- rubbing some of the other women the wrong way for obvious reasons. Due to her “model” status, the girl has a lot to show off when it comes to her body and luxury swimwear. Recently spotted in Vegas, the television star made headlines in her nautically-themed striped suit. Ready Or Naut is another great option if you’re looking to get Courtney’s striped look. If you’re just wanting to capture the nautical theme, Sea Dreamy sticks to the red and white color palette of Courtney’s suit while maintaining the nautical vibe.

From the most controversial, to the most well-liked, Emily Maynard captured America’s hearts on season 15 of “The Bachelor”. From her sticky sweet southern personality, to her perfect looks, there were so many reasons everyone in America fell in love with this young, single mother. In one of the episodes from her season, she wore this great floral bikini sitting poolside with some of the guys. There are so many great luxury swimwear options to mimic this look, but for a similar pattern and silhouette, Floral Fantasy is your best bet. If you’re more of a fan of the darker floral pattern, like Emily’s, More Than A Feeling is another great option.

Throwback Thursday- Amanda Bynes Edition

Unless you haven’t turned on the tv in the past few months, or logged onto a major internet news site (such as Yahoo)- you’ve probably heard the news about Amanda Bynes recent fall from grace. Including multiple arrests, crazy tweets, and beyond strange behavior- it’s safe to say the actress is going through a really difficult time in her life. Rather than focus on the negative, we figured we would travel back in time to a time when Amanda Bynes was at the top of her game- starring in multiple hit television shows and major blockbuster films, all while looking drop dead gorgeous. The girl born and raised in California developed a classic Californian look with long blonde locks and a rich, dark tan which many young girls idolized. Here are a few of her best style moments.

Amanda would often like to play it safe with colors she not only felt good in, but looked even better in. Coral was definitely one of her favorite colors to wear- most often worn in cute mini-dresses that would show off the actress’s long legs. The color is great for summer, especially when paired with a killer tan like Amanda’s. If you’re looking to wear the color using your designer swimwear, try Melt Away. This coral will look every bit as youthful and summer-y as Amanda’s coral red carpet style.

Continuing along those same lines, anything bright really seemed to suit Amanda. Like we mentioned above, the bright colors really highlight her golden tan and long blonde locks. Colors like yellow, blue, and pink are youthful and fun and (best of all) perfect for the beach. Our luxury swimwear comes in an array of bright colors like coral (Pretty Young Thing), turquoise (Paradise), purple (Unforgettable), and much more.

Finally, have you ever seen white look so good on anyone?! To pull off such a color, it’s helpful to have the tanned skin that Amanda has. She also shows us that you should let your body and the clothing speak for itself- without layering on too much jewelry or too many accessories. Keep things simple in a basic white bikini like Truly, Madly, Deeply. Without overdoing it, your simplicity of your look paired with your rocking beach body will speak for itself.

Our thoughts are with Amanda during this difficult time, but we’re confident she will pull through and come back better than ever. We can’t wait to see what work she will produce in the future!

Pretty Little Liars Spotted in Summer’s Hottest Trends

Pretty Little Liars has quickly become a worldwide phenomenon. Entering its fourth season, there seems to be no slowing for the show as well as for the four beauties that star in it. While they may play four, fairly average, middle-class teen girls on the show, their style says they’re anything but that. Not only are they trend setters on the show, but in real life the stars (Lucy Hale, Ashley Benson, Shay Mitchell, and Troian Bellisario) are young starlets quickly making a name for themselves in the industry. For example, Ashley Benson recently starred in the hit movie “Spring Breakers” with Selena Gomez and Vanessa Hudgens. It’s easy to see why these girls are so popular. Their style is well beyond their years. We’ve captured a few of their best looks and have translated them into a designer swimwear look that’s easy to wear.

Lucy Hale is the perfect example of why it’s best to wear brights when you’ve got a great tan. The bright coral color of her dress bounces off her perfectly golden tan- really making the star shine. Not only that, but the color is huge for summer- seemingly on everything from luxury swimwear to purses, and everything in between. The coral color of Pretty Young Thing is so similar to Lucy’s dress- which is sure to make you a huge hit wherever you choose to wear your suit next!

One of the biggest trends of the summer is color blocking. From color blocking black and whites, to color blocking some of summer’s boldest and brightest colors- the trend is taking over. As seen on Ashley Benson in one of the episodes of the show, color blocking brights is best done with polar opposite colors- such as coral and teal. Although minimal, Melt Away features subtle color blocking with the turquoise accents on the coral swimwear. Feeling bold? Try the Paradise bandeau with some coral accessories.

Shay Mitchell goes to show that just because you may be wearing a floral print, doesn’t mean you can’t look powerful and in charge doing so. By sporting a floral that features mostly black, you’ll look more mysterious that with a floral that features, say, mostly pinks and whites. Florals are often looked at as sweet and innocent, so you’ll be sure to give people at the pool a pleasant surprise when you’re spotted in a bold floral like More Than A Feeling. Now strike a pose and look the part, like Shay!

Supermodel Swim Trends

The Victoria’s Secret supermodels are, by far, some of the most idolized women across, not only the country, but the entire world. They feature to-die-for tans, perfect complexions, gorgeous hair, and rock hard bodies. They seem to be photographed in their designer swimwear more often than they’re photographed in their regular, day-to-day clothes. To give you some inspiration in more ways than one, we’ve put together some of our favorite Angels beach looks.

It seems that so many of these girls love the ever-popular bohemian trend. These swimsuits have features that label them as “boho” like their crafty prints, an array of colors (always including brown), and bohemian details in the hardware. To get this look, try either Call On Me or Crazy For You from Lady Lux. The chevron prints in both are not only hugely popular, but easily a bohemian-style print. Call On Me features colors that are reminiscent of a “desert oasis” with the oranges and teals. Both feature brown leather hardware that not only adds some luxury detail to this luxury swimwear, but it completes the bohemian trend.

As we mentioned above, these girls are known for their glowing, golden tans. Fresh faced from beautiful, tropical locations such as Brazil and Africa- these girls were born with their perfect complexions. That doesn’t mean you can’t recreate their look with a killer spray tan, however. What goes best with a great tan? A bold swimsuit to draw attention to it! With colors such as coral, turquoise, and purple, you’ll be sure to stand out on the beach and show off your beautiful tan! Doutzen Kroes was spotted in a bright coral bikini at the beach- similar to the coral color in Pretty Young Thing. As Behati Prinsloo shows us, purple (like in the Unforgettable bikini) looks great against the bright turquoise water. Another great option? The Paradise bandeau- which mimics the bright blue waters of the native lands of these gorgeous women.

Lastly, these girls love their flirty floral prints. Using strictly feminine colors such as pinks and teals, these flirty styles show off a softer side of anyone wearing them. We love Alessandra’s triangle bikini, which features glamorous hardware at the hips. If you’re looking for a triangle (like Alessandra’s), Secret Escape could be the suit for you. Otherwise, we think Floral Fantasy is about as feminine as they come- featuring not only the flirty floral print, but also the glam hardware and a sexy cut.
